I always have a Filter on my Lenses

Whether its a coloured filter or a clear UV filter, there is always one fitted.

I feel more comfortable in its ability to keep the rain and such off the front element

I use either HMC Hoya or MRC B+W Filters

I keep a filter on most of the time outdoors to protect the lens. Indoors, I usually remove the filter to avoid the possibility of unwanted reflections when using room lighting.

I use clear filters for protection too. I once had a camera blow over whilst tripod mounted and it landed face down in wet sand. Although a lot of gentle cleaning was needed the filter almost certainly saved the lens despite cracking.

I like to use a yellow filter for B&W unless working handheld in poor lighting where the extra stop is desirable.

I used to keep UV filters fitted to all my lenses, but I abandoned them when I started using a slot-in filter system (the filter holder caused vignetting with wideangles when mounted on top of the UV).

In general I don't miss them at all, but I can see the benefit for outdoor work (I don't enjoy cleaning sea spray off of expensive lenses). What puts me off starting to use them again is the price of the larger multicoated filters, especially in Hasselblad bayonet mount.

Ed.
