Square filters and lens hoods.
I have some A and some P size filters with holders. I would like to use them more, but don't currently have any sort of lens hood that works with them. I know some people get by without ever using hoods, but I invariably get flare which usually ruins an otherwise good image. Are hoods necessary for square filters? If so, which type should I buy? Thanks,
Alex. |

Cokin make lens hoods to fit their filter holders.

Thanks, Ian.
I have seen these advertised. Do they work in a way that makes it easy to change filters? I got something similar at one point, but not Cokin branded, but it didn't really fit, so was never used. I just wonder if they're necessary, and if the holder itself helps prevent flare? Alex |

The Cokin ones work fine and you can easily add/remove filters.

Mike, I've used Cokin filters for well over 30 years with no issues, it's later competitors and their distributors that claim theirs are better.
There are cheaper alternatives to Ckin as well Ian |

The negative comments that I have seen about Cokin filters relate to a magenta cast which may, allegedly, be introduced to colour images when using ND filters. If your use is mainly black and white, this shouldn't be an issue.

I've definitely got some colour medium format slides where I used a Cokin 3 stop grad with a terrible magenta cast, which was then accentuated by Velvia. Their 2 stop grad seemed OK. Never used their b&w colour contrast filters but they should be fine.
