Default Sepia toning new Ilford Multigrade RC

I have been sepia toning the new multigrade and when dry it appears to have a residue on the black areas of the print which sometimes reflects an image of my print washer dividers. i assumed it needed more washing, which works with some but not with the heavier residue.
Also the light areas appears almost silver when light reflects off them.
Has any one come across this, and any solutions?
Thanks

I have sepia toned the MG5 pearl with no problems, in fact it tones very well, sorry I can't help with your problem, it is something I have never come across, only thing I can think of is it glossy that you have been toning, could be a problem with the glossy surface

A couple of weeks ago I had my first attempt at sepia toning and I used MG V glossy. Had a look just now and I cannot see the problems you have described. I washed mine in a Nova slot washer for about 15 minutes after toning.

Bill, it may be hard to convey on screen, but could you try and upload a picture or two of the said print and its problem?

Hi Bill,
Firstly, was a hypo clearing agent used at any stage of the print process?
Secondly, what is the water flow/agitation like during your print wash cycle?

As you may know, toning will reveal any and all flaws in a print process. And if there is a pattern of print washer dividers, then perhaps the prints stuck to the surface preventing adequate washing.

I had a similar problem to this many years ago with sepia toning the old glossy Multigrade 3 paper. The darkest areas developed a metallic sheen and lost detail and I had that staining around the edges. IIRC I rewashed the prints (I was using a bath back then!) and the stain went but the metallic effect didn't. I was fairly new to darkroom printing then and assumed I'd mixed the toner wrongly. I've only toned FB prints since then but I intend toning some on the new Ilford MGV fairly soon. Just one question - is your water hard or soft?

Default Toning

I am assuming this is a normal 'sepia' tone so from what I remember if the washing is incomplete what will happen is that area will remain darker than the other rest. I don't think this is a washing problem.

Have you tried bleaching it again (clutching at straws here) That worked for me when I hadn't washed/bleached adequately.

Is the bleach new?

It must have been in the MG3 era that I last sepia toned anything and I agree with Rob Archer MG3 was not a good paper and had a lot of problems with the surface finish on the glossy paper, but there was a greater choice in those days, I think I went over to Agfa.

Just ilfostop then fotospeed odourless fixer.
Washer is a paterson washer for fibre paper.

I have always been a bit suspicious of odourless fixer (as I am with odourless stop bath) I may be wrong, but perhaps the new fixer is OK to use for normal prints, but not when it is used on an image that is going to be bleached and toned.

Perhaps when toning you need a fixer that has more 'kick' than odourless can give - or less dilution perhaps. Also bear in mind that MG5 emulsion contains a percentage more silver than the older MG4, so a longer fixing time may well be prudent.
