Default Greetings and question about enlarger, Durst pictochrom plus elite

Hello all, glad to have found a forum to all things darkroom!

I have been working with B&W film across a number of formats for couple of years and up to recently printed with a De Vere 504 with the Ilford multigrade system- great enlarger. However my timer has broken down and may have the opportunity to invest in the durst pictochrom plus elite 5x4 - I have the manual, but its quite intricate, and was wondering if anyone has any advice/recommendations to this.

Can one work in a manual mode for B&W printing, or does one need to set it up first? I print with a lot of split filtration and do a lot of burning/dodging - sometimes changing aperture settings for burning etc - would this be very complicated with this enlarger? I will not be using a exposure probe by the way..

I will be on the look out for a controller/timer for the De Vere (its starting to flit through numbers, making it impossible to print with), but have read different reports as to the Durst.

Thanks a million for any advice

Grainne

Welcome Grainne. I cannot offer any advice on your equipment but I know exactly what you mean about complicated manuals and having no-one to share the difficulties with

Here's hoping someone here has the knowledge to help.I'd be surprised if there was no-one to help

Mike

Welcome!
Don't know anything about the Durst enlarger bits you mention but as for timers; An RH Designs StopClock Pro. Enlarger Timer would do all the things you describe. Wouldn't be without mine!
Hope that doesn't muddy the waters too much!
Best Wishes, Mike

I think the person you want to speak to on this topic is Cesare. He has the same/similar enlarger and posted the manual a while back here;

Hopefully he'll see this post or you could perhaps send him a PM (personal message). Left mouse click on the name.

The durst is very advanced and can do pretty much what ever you want.

Cheers for that lads! I suppose another thing - my biggest fear with these newer electronic enlargers (Autofocus etc) that if the parts go, replacing or servicing will be very difficult and very expensive. Lots to think of!

I print every day and love the whole process - it is all worth it in the end!

Cheers- will contact Cesaere as well..
