Default Tetenal 5ltr C41 kit

Hi
thought i would have a go at developing my own colour film (regularly do my own B&W) so bought a tetenal 5ltr kit. I'd imagined that it would be not that dis-similar to B&W ie mixing a set amount of the chemical with water to provide a working solution.
The kit concerned simply has instructions for mixing the entire 5ltr at once. As I won't use it all that quickly, it will expire before i've used it.

Can i simply re-jig the amounts, divide by 5 and make up 5 x 1ltr batches as and when needed???

Many thanks in advance for your help / advice!

Rich

Hi Rich. The Tetenal 5ltr kit was the first I ever bought from Nova Darkroom several years ago and unless my memory has let me down or Tetenal has changed its comprehensive instructions, there was something in the instructions on mixing smaller amounts.

I am almost positive that I didn't mix all 5L at once. As long as you stick to the proportions in the instructions I see no reason why the dev and blix shouldn't be effective in smaller amounts.

I'd use Protectan gas on the dev and blix conc each time to protect what remains, especially dev. I did this but even then there will be some danger that the dev will die before it is all used unless your throughput of C41 films is fairly high.

If you do B&W as well it might be worth using XP2+ to use up the chems.

Looking longer term and once all used you might want to consider changing to the Fuji-Hunt C41 5L kit which Matt at AGphotographic sells. From my market testing it is cheaper than the Tetenal 5L kit and has the possible added advantage( this is disputed to some extent) of using separate bleach and fix. A Kodak chemical engineer on another site says that C41 blix isn't as effective in ensuring C41 films longevity as using separate bleach and fix.

Many thanks for your comprehensive response - it is greatly appreciated.
Will check out that Fuji Hunt kit - also first time i'd heard of AG on this forum for whom I'll now be regular customer. I'll check them out for the Protectan gas spray also.
Thanks again for taking the time to respond
Rich

I've used both kits and would say the fuji hunt does give better results not so noticeable on the first rolls in 1/2 ltr but more with latter rolls. You do tend to get a little silver retention with the tetenal kit after a few rolls. I just mix up 1/2 a liter at a time using a syringe to measure the developer parts out and squirt butane gas in the bottle to keep them fresh. I've now had my fuji kit for 10 months since opened and it seems to last quite well.

That's encouraging news , I have a Fuji Hunt kit and have been saving my colour rolls to develop in one go as I didn't want to end throwing away a boat load of unused chemicals . Looks like I need to dig my CPE 2 out from under the bench

Rich I thought everyone here knew of AG photgraphic but anyway it looks as if you have now had a chance to look and have come to the same conclusion as most of us which is that it is worth checking for all manner of materials. It has a great range and is seldom if ever beat on price.

Ben This is very good news. 10 months and the Fuji kit still going strong is pretty good. I don't think my Tetenal kit lasted that long.

*stupid* question time - butane - is that cigarette lighter refill stuff? I'd prefer to try this as the Protectan is prohibitively expensive without a larger order of things

Something like that.
What is needed is an inert gas that is heavier than air so that it will lay on top of the liquid to be protected and thereby inhibit its absorption of oxygen from the air.

I've previously bought the 1litre kit and divided it in half into two 500ml batches. The concentrates last at least 6weeks unprotectan'ed... I can't remember if the actual instructions with the kit say that or if that was just the common knowledge over in the DIY Colour group on flickr at the time.

Wouldn't spraying butane about be a bit of a fire risk?
