Default Canon EOS 5000 advice

I don't currently have a 35mm camera but a trader on the local flea market is asking 50 euros for a Canon 5000 but would probably take much, much less. It has the 38...76 kit lens. Any comment from users?

My local dealer usually charges £10-£15 for a budget EOS body and somewhere between £20 to £40 for a cheap lens.

Cycle through the shutter speeds and do plenty of test firings. Listen carefully for a wheezing sound in the camera and look at the shutter curtains. As the light seals perish, they leave an oily deposit on the shutter curtains and give rise to the wheeze.

Also check the mirror for oily deposits as this is would indicate the seals under the prism are degrading.

If the shutter & seals check out, the 5000 will make for a lightweight body that will accept some quality glass - Can't comment on the 38-76mm lens as I've never used it.

I would not buy it. EOS cameras do not fetch much these days. Have a look on Ebay. The EOS 5000 is a very early consumer EOS camera with a plastic bayonet. For 25-40 Euro you can get an EOS 300V or 300X, which is a much newer camera with a sleek and elegant design. 50-100 Euro will buy you an EOS 30V or 33V, which is not only newer but also more sophisticated than the EOS 5000.

EOS 5000 + kit lens is worth less than £10. I bought a very nice EOS 50e for £15.
