Hi Terry,

in the early 1980s I assisted with a portrait session of Bill Brandt. The BBC film captures his demeanour exceptionally well. He spent the whole portrait session leaning forward with his arms crossed over his crossed legs, talking very quietly with his strange accent (mixture of German and ‘Posh’ English) but with regular loud bursts of laughter.

He also mentioned how relatively easy it was to get people to let him photograph them. He explained that in the 1930s not many people were really doing documentary work amongst working people. At a time when having a professional portrait was way out of most people's league, being asked to sit for a photographer for free was very much interpreted as a compliment.

In these day of everyone thrusting their mobiles into every conceivable situation, it is hard to imagine how it was back in the day.

Bests,

David.

Whilst musing in the dark this morning waiting for stuff to develop I remembered this from way back in my memory. Whilst some prints were washing I did a google and found it.
It's a BBC broadcasted interview with Bill Brandt from 1983.Though I haven't seen it since then I could still hear his voice in my head.

Thanks for posting this, Paul. I had never seen Brandt interviewed, and I have to confess that I had never seen his portraits either. In fact, I never really gave him much thought since the late 1960s or early 70s, when I remember his pebbly beach nudes being featured in Creative Camera. My interest is very much re-awakened as a result of watching this.

Besides Brandt's voice and demeanour, which are very likeable, the interviewer's voice is memorably grating. Any idea who that was? To his credit, he did manage to get Brand talking about his photos.

That's a treasure trove, thanks for the link, and thanks retrospectively to Peter Adam.

I am stunned that both Brandt and Lartigue said they never looked at their photos or any photos. (e.g. Lartigue: "I am a cook who makes jam but prefers fresh fruit.") I wonder how typical that is among influential photographers?
