What is this piece of equipment?
I have been watching 'Hotel Reserve' on BBC iPlayer starring James Mason as a amateur photographer caught up with an espionage gang.
The police had confiscated his negatives and ran them through a projector that displayed the negs as positive. Anybody know what that projector is? The film is on iPlayer BBC4 and this action happens 13 minutes into the film. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episod.../hotel-reserve |

It's probably a cine film editor, used for splicing film.
It's more interesting that the images are positives rather than negatives. Ian |

James is using a Contax I (f), although the serial numbers given for both his and Herbert's cameras are false. The likelihood of both of them having matching cameras is remote seeing as, according to Hans-Jürgen Kuc, there were seven different variants offered in just four years.
But it's an enjoyable film and is, or was, available on a Spanish DVD as "Contraespionaje". |

So far, based on what Collas and Ian have said or is that have not said, there is no explanation as to what kind of projector might have existed then( 1944) that could do this that we know of
So this is a trick of some kind but as yet we know not what? Is that a correct summary? Mike |

I haven’t seen the film, but if the projected pictures are B&W, they could actually be on
B&W reversal film as opposed to negatives. Otherwise, some simple editing would allow the effect of a person handling negatives, but the machine showing positive images. Alex Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |
