Default BBC Four Collection

I have been slowly working my way through the BBC Four Collections. There are some real gems in there.

Larry Adler narrating a short about London and New York with a soundtrack of his trademark harmonica playing.

There is also a documentary - A House in Bayswater - by some chap called Ken Russell.

"First transmitted in 1960, this film was written and directed by Ken Russell for the BBC. It follows the bohemian lifestyles of the tenants of an old London house in Bayswater and its housekeeper, Mrs Collings. The blend of documentary style filming, colourful anecdotes and stylised sequences produces a highly evocative and entertaining film as well as an early example of Ken Russell’s distinctive approach to film making."

At the time Russell also lived in the house, as did Magnum Photographer David Hurn - shown shooting a couple of double-stroke M3s and still using Leica. The last five minutes give a clue as to Russell's style to come later on in his career.

Did anyone see the documentary on BBC4 earlier this week on Rosie Newman? A member of the British aristocracy who documented her travels around the world on colour movie film.

Can be viewed here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00cl57m

Looks like there are three more episodes to come.

Steve.
