Default Using a folder

Nicked this idea from another website that has tips on using folding cameras (may have been the rangefinderforum). When using a camera that has no means of preventing a double exposure wind the film on a little when you have taken a photograph. When you next use the camera if you can't see a number you then know it needs winding on to the next shot.

That's a great idea - and so simple, I'm surprised I haven't heard it before.

It's great for another reason. Norm's post gave me the Eureka moment. It covers the "have I wound on?" bit and still allows you to wind-on and thus avoid the possibility of any tendency for the film to slacken while it waits to be "shot".

It's something I posted a while ago now, wind the film onto just before the number appears, say, with Foma films, to the third set of large dots appear, that way if you close the camera before the film is used up, it is not unknown for the film to be pulled out when you open the bellows, then when you wind on to the number you correct the problem, also, you don't double expose accidently, I got this from a very old book on photography that my Uncle gave me when I was 10 or 11, callled the all in one camera book by W D Emanuel, published,I believe in the 40's by The Focal Press, and It always stuck in my memory, so that when using folders, which I often do these days, it is second nature

There's good and bad news in Richard's post. The good news is that this site already contained more "gems" that I had thought, the bad news is that there are now so many "gems" that I have forgotten some useful ones

I am an absolute beginner when it comes to using a folding camera .Richard would you consider writing an article for FADU about folding cameras and their use.

That's an excellent idea. Something that goes beyond the usual you tube how tos and 'look at my camera' features and is full of 'tips' and near forgotten 'gems' as Mike puts it.

As for remembering to wind on, I never do: so I don't. Always just before shooting so no double exposures or bowed film.... just the odd blank frame once in a while...

It's great idea but would not work here as I would forget to look it is bad enough I cannot remember to wind on.
