RC paper has been in existance a lot longer than the 70's, although in limited quantities. The Military was using it well before then although it wasnt called Resin Coated. It was still coated with something that was waterproof. I also think Ilford dabbled with it in the 50's.
I was convinced that fibre base paper was the way to go and still have a fair bit. However I recently changed framed prints I'd had hanging in my lounge for the past 5-6 years, and when compared to the replacements the FB prints were slightly yellow in comparison. This was all over not just the edges. This was not due to insufficient washing either as the off white was even all over. My LRPS Panel submitted to the Royal in 1991 on RC paper are still unfaded and unstained. The panel I submitted in 1993 for my ARPS was on FB paper and they too are not quite as white as the RC paper. Apart from that the increase in price of FB over RC, has made larger sizes of FB almost priced out of reach of amateurs. I will be using RC from now on in. |

Agreed with the above. I don't have a sink in the darkroom, the plumbing is all on the other side of the house, but a step over the landing and I have the bathroom with all the water I need. Using RC is definitely quicker by far. There again the darkroom is my hobby or part of it, and speed is not at the top of my agenda.
Incidentally I have NEVER has a problem with water getting under the edges of the print. Yes it does creep under, but it will dry out fairly quickly and does not leave a mark, especially if you use a printing frame that leaves a narrow margin which will be cut off anyway |

I think Maris meant that because he keeps his completed FB prints in water while he continues to work on printing others, then at the end uses a washer for them, that he saves the 2 mins manual washing time incurred by each RC print. Makes sense to me.
Most of us - I imagine - don't print as many as him in one go so the logic becomes less compelling |

Resin coated papers got a bad reputation in the 1970s. It may or may not have been deserved. However, most reputable sources today show that RC papers do hold up. Fiber papers do have a different look and feel, but whether or not that is preferable is subjective, let’s be honest.
I still, like many, use RC for proofs and rough printing, and switch to fiber for the finished work. However, I have not printed anything larger than 14x11 in decades. One of these days, I will make some 20x16 prints, and they will be on RC. It will be easier to handle, and I won’t have to wash them for an hour. I agree with Maris about using an archival washer for fiber and the fact that it doesn’t require as much labor. But, when I print large, I’ll only have a few, and I’ll just have to take the time. If for no other reason: I don’t have a 20x16 washer and will have to use a tray. |

Washing 40 RC photographs takes 80 minutes work from me. Washing 40 FB photographs takes 5 minutes work from me and that only to load and unload the print washer.

I keep my RC prints in a holding bath until the printing session is over then wash in a tray under a running tap agitating and flipping them. I've never had any problems leaving them to soak while printing others.

Why can't you wash the RC prints in the same print washer as the fibre paper?
