Default BBC 4 “The road to Palmyra” 21-22.00hrs 7th May

A documentary with Dan Cruickshank and Don McCullin. Could be worth watching/recording.

Thanks Marty. I think the words "could be" might be appropriate as it is a joint presentation and I think the photographic aspect might be limited but we won't know until we see it. Worth setting the video

I watched this programme last night.

I found it very moving, both from the human side but also from the destruction levelled at such a historic site.

Well worth watching.....not too much of McCullin's images, but nice to see film in use.

I watched this programme and found it very interesting. Don M used a DSLR for a lot of the time but for the photos of the damage to Palmyra and Homs he used a Mamiya Press with what looked like the 75mm lens, and yellow filter.

Well worth watching on BBC i player if you missed it.

A good programme - allways good to see film used, but what a size the press camera was.

I was going to ask the question" Which camera" but that's been answered - partly. I take it that as he seemed to be winding the film it was a 120 but an explanation of all the gadgetry on top of the camera would be appreciated. As he mentioned his darkroom I am assuming that it was B&W film and have made the assumption that his 2010 B&W pictures were from the same camera or at least were from a B&W film as opposed to a digital card converted to B&W

On the programme itself it was well put together.

I'm not sure if it was a 6x7 or 6x9 roll film holder he was using in Palmyra....the shots from 2010 looked like 6x7, but could have been cropped for TV.

The gadget on top of the viewfinder was another viewfinder. Maybe there's a restriction of the built-in viewfinder for the lenses he was using that required a different one. Did make the camera look unwieldy though.

Good to see him using an old Gossen meter in reflective mode too.

Here's an image of a similar Mamiya Universal with an accessory viewfinder.
