Red filter for darkroom illumination
I'm wanting to make some filters for white light LEDs to work in my darkroom, but am struggling to find an easy source of suitable filter material.
I'm only using B&W materials, so a standard red filter will be perfect. What should I be looking for to find a sheet of suitable material to cut down to size? |

Try contacting srb, there is a contact in the links section, or perhaps Lee filters, I think they do gelatin red sheets that can be used for filters

Lee Filters do a wide range of gels aimed at stage lighting. These gels are quite often used for "mood lighting" as well as other applications - They even do kits so that standard fluorescent tubes.
I have a sheet of the #027. If you wanted to try a piece, I can pop a bit in the post. |

I think you would need a tricolour red 25 if you want cut out all green and blue.
See http://www.leefilters.com/index.php/camera-directory/camera-dir-list/category/tricolour |

wrong starting point
Why start with a white LED array if you want red light? Buy red LEDs.

Why not a red LED? Well, basically the ones I have aren't dimmable, and are very bright. I had a bit of exposed film in front to reduce these down, but wanted to try a red filter on normal LEDs as the normal bulbs I have are dimmable...

Although it doesn't really answer your question a friend of mine uses a Red LED flashlight in his darkroom when he needs to find something.
He doesn't shine it directly on the paper, otherwise he would probably fog the print but it does work. A regular safe light will fog the paper if it's too bright. |

Wouldn't red LEDs give out a very narrow spectrum of light compared to an incandescent bulb? (Due to the way they produce light based on discrete energy levels within the atoms of the semiconductor). So in theory at least you could probably get away with relatively bright LED illumination with no danger of fogging paper?
