Caffenol - C
Hi All.
Everything now on order, hope to get something to show soon. I've been reading upon Harman Direct Positive Paper and have seen some pretty good results using Caffenol C, which seems pretty easy to make up and is relatively "green", something I could mix up away from home (I will most likely be using the pinhole while in our holiday caravan). this site seems pretty useful http://ueberlicht.com/2012/harman-di...t-in-caffenol/ Anybody any recipes that they have used successfully ? (loads online, but trust FADU members more) As usual any tips, hints or observations most welcome. Ian

Well, things have not gone to plan, but hey ho, that's life.
The "hole" I had ordered seems to have been lost in the post, so have had to resort to a home made hole, no idea what the f number is, but guessed at around f256 (0.55mm / 140mm) First test of the camera was this morning (full sun @ 2min) with disappointing results, although I did a bit of an image (see attached) as you can see 1/2 a picture is better than no picture Dev Tetenal Eukobrom 1+4 90sec, as per bottle, would longer be better ?, Stop Rollei RCS 30sec Fix Rapid Fixer 1+4 60sec, as per bottle This is where my really limited knowledge fails me, being direct positive paper, I'm confused as to if I need a longer exposure or a shorter exposure.

Yes it needs longer exposure. Black is under exposed unlike regular b&w photo paper and too white is over exposure. Keep plugging away!

Which iso/asa did you rate the paper at?

Hi Marty,
I used 1.5 as this is on the Ilford Pinwheel and seemed a good place to start Ian

My initial thinking is that you need a bit LESS exposure... As the shadows are more grey than black, wouldn't that mean you've give TOO MUCH exposure, with an even longer times making the shadows lighter still? I'm open to being persuaded otherwise though and I can see my little brain ticking away for a while now to come up with the right answer. I think I'll re-read the Ilford page about positive paper, so I might be back later. Terry S |

Terry, it's perhaps hard to say without knowing the original scene, although where I consider maximum black with a negative print, the same could be said of maximum white with a positive print.
The print appears to lack contrast through out, which seems a little odd considering both the light conditions and the DPP's contrast rich characteristics. And I'm not familiar with this developer but in my own, admittedly limited experience, I found the paper very developer intensive; meaning the paper exhausts (even fresh) developer much more quickly than regular photo paper. Ian, is there anyway of doing a kind of test strip with the exposures?

Hi Marty, Hi Terry,
Thanks for the replies. Looking at maybe having a go at a couple of shots in the next day or so but will mix up a new batch of Multigrade at 1+14 and give it the full 5 min (the Harman DPP sheet recommends 2.00 to 5.00 mins) Am using a Paterson print drum ( uses 2oz /55ml for a 8 x 10 print) so think I'll use about 75 - 100ml as a one shot developer. Hopefully post the pic's here in a few days. Ian

And having looked at the print carefully, I note that neither of the borders at the top and at the RHS are black, as expected, so you may be right. I've also just done a quick edit of the picture, with the borders at what I presume the right tone, and it does produce a rather dark picture. Not knowing when it was taken it may well be too dark and if so, again as you said, it may need more exposure as well as more developer. Terry S |

Hi Terry.
Picture was taken in my back garden around mid morning in full sun. Ian
