Sharif Photographic
I have had a note from Sharif to say that he is taking retirement at the end of the month so that is a competitive source of materials no longer available to us which is a shame.
I have pointed out to him the downside of retirement in that you never get a day off. In the meantime if there is anything you need from him you have the rest of the month to get it. https://www.sharifphotographic.co.uk I have no connection to the business other than a happy customer. Bill |

Thanks for passing this on, Bill. I have used this company, and have always had great service. It’s a pity that we are losing a good source of materials.

Likewise, i've used Sharif several times before and had nothing but great service.
It's a shame to lose another materials supplier. Mike |

Thanks for that announcement. Bill. I have never used him but do always keep an eye on his stock and prices. It might be my imagination but I detected in more recent times that his prices did not enjoy the same "edge" over the other retailers as in the past
I suspect this was not his fault in that his buying leverage may have been good enough over a large stock of items. I know nothing of his business but I suspect that it was relatively small scale. Still, a great pity that he is giving up. On the other hand I have enjoyed retirement for a number of years now so who am I to deny it to anyone else? Mike |

Thanks Bill. I feel this may be a sign that the one-man band retailer/ small specialist shops are dying, much to our loss as consumers
A real pity Mike |

Sad there's no one to step into his shoes. Every day we lose a small business such as this. Hope he enjoys his time off.

For over a year now just before lockdown, I have been thinking of starting a small business geared around selling film to begin with to see if I could generate some income not having had any work for some time now.
I have spent many hours checkin out the competition and working out the logistics. I now have all the trade accounts in place for the various films I was thinking of. So far, I haven't gone any further and this thread and sparked me up again. Postage out to customers and packing materials is what it is, not interested in making any profit on that. For example, a single roll of film has to go as a small packet according to Royal Mail with a cost of around £3.20 if sent 2nd class. So here is a question... What price would I need to be selling a roll of, let's say Ilford FP4 or HP5 in 35mm or 120 to make you interested in buying direct from myself. ? |

A very nice idea Ian, but I don't think we can say without having more information. A single film in a Jiffy bag will by unit charge would cost more. The I would think the answer is sell them in blocks of 10's minimum, The postage would not be much more as would be the Jiffy bag for one
How much is film at cost price? but if the price is visibly below that of the 'usual suspects' You would get my business. (I may even go back to using slide film.) |
