RH Designs and Secondhand Darkroom Supplies. Shut.
Tried to get in touch by email with RH Designs to check if it is OK to place an order during lockdown. No reply.
Secondhand Darkroom Supplies (SDS) have a notice on their site saying moving to larger premises, reopen in April. Reading the websites it appears that RH Designs and SDS are part of the same company. "Reopen in April" that's a lot of business to lose. The place I used to work for shifted their engineering machinery, lathes etc, stores, racking, furniture, benches, office equipment, communications, everything a small light electrical engineering firm needed, and all in one day. Up and running within the week. April?, I suppose it gives me time to save up. Cheers.

Frustrating. During lockdown I've come across a lot of companies in different fields which are just not open or contactable without any obvious reason. At least SDS give an explanation!

When Dr Richard Ross retired a while ago SDS took over the RH designs, I was looking to get something from them and saw the same notice, I suppose it makes sense to make this move during lockdown, business would be very much down during this time, I know that during your last lockdown last March they were closed and on furlough a lot of the time

In and out of trading
Second Hand Darkrooms has not had a lot of luck recently, but has always come back. Not helped by his website failure a short while ago. I have been to his place a couple of times when his business was run from where he lived then he moved the business side a few miles away.
Where he is going to, no one knows but I have confidence that he will be back up and running when he says..... What is more of a mystery is, what has happened to Collectable Cameras? His website used to have a whole list of quite collectable (and very usable) items. Plus sometimes a real gem or two. Again I have been to the premises several times but since he changed his website there has been so little activity. I don't think it has changed for a few months now. Has anyone been in contact or has any other information. |

I have wondered about Collectable Cameras myself, He used to have a big list, updated all the time, then his old site was left with nothing new for a year in 2019, now this new online site nothing seems to change, and such a tiny amount of stock, I have bought a lot from Simon over the years, but he seems to be almost stagnant now, shame

I have just spotted a notice on the home page of RH Designs.
Don't know when that appeared. Shutting on February 26th , moving etc, open again in April. Cheers.

Not sure if you're looking for something in particular so I'm probably off base here but I just ordered a foot switch for my RH Stopclock from this place.
https://www.theimagingwarehouse.com/...nlarger-Timers Great to deal with - quick to respond and ship. It's still in transit but hopefully it gets here ok. Regards Dave |

The Imaging warehouse
who they also trade under the names of NOVA Darkroom and Premier Ink (They bought them out about a year ago), are a different case to the other two companies with quite a lot of staff. SHD and Collectable cameras are each basically a one man band.
However Second Hand Darkroom are advertising on their current website for staff, so it may be that the business is having a complete turn a round. I think they are in a unique position in that, they are the principal suppliers of used darkroom equipment. While this is not likely to become a huge business, where else can you go to if you want items for equipping a darkroom at a reasonable price. RK - possibly, but their website hasn't an awful lot of stuff that you cannot get elsewhere. Even Mr Cad before their move to central London about 8 years ago was a place to go to for D/room items, but now has not a lot of darkroom kit, maybe because of storage space in their shop. When they were in Croydon, they had premises akin to a warehouse to store items. Last edited by John King; 28th February 2021 at 08:53 AM. |
