Replacing lamps in the ILFORD MULTIGRADE 500 head
My tip is to check and confirm which lamp has blown; as the blue - green filter distinction is not obvious, and so one may end up replacing the wrong lamp, briefly considering that some other fault must be to blame.

A good tip Tom.
Another tip is to let them cool down before to touch them Neil.

Yes, indeed Tom. To date I've had the green (left side) lamp blow twice, once in 2007 and again recently. It is also recommended that if one lamp blows then the other should also be replaced, this is to ensure an even colour/contrast mix. However I didn't do this the first time the lamp blew but did the second time for I could clearly see the blue (right side) lamp was a lot dimmer then the replacement green.

Halogen lamps typically do get dimmer as they age so changing them both at once is definitely a good idea. When I replaced the lamp in my LPL 7700 once the new one was nearly a stop brighter than the old.

I only replaced the lamp for the green filter which probably gets much more use as the green lamp only is on for focusing.
