Cool Darkcloth tape measure

Just thought I'd share this one, and apologies in advance if this is already common practice.

I think this might be a handy addition for LF shooters, especially if you find yourself doing shots where bellows extension factor come into play. Basically I've sewn a fabric woven tapemeasure (bought from ebay) into the edge of my already home-made darkcloth. So for closeup shots it then becomes easy to measure the extension to work out the correction you need to apply to the shutter speed - and as its on your darkcloth you've always got it with you, and its always to hand. AND it adds no extra weight to your kit.

I hope this will especially be of use to people with cameras that don't have any kid of fixed ruler/scale incorporated already (i.e. field cameras).

Although this particular tip is not relevant to my own photography, may I say how valuable simple ideas like this are and perhaps some FADU members do not post some of the simple things they do in the belief that others may take their advice for granted. To give an example, many years ago I remarked to a student that after I have filled a 5 litre container with a chemical solution, when I come to pour some out, I always tend to spill some. His response was don’t fill it full. Such a simple idea had not occurred to me.

That's a great idea Dave, and can I say that your sewing is certainly better than mine

This is fairly lightweight, too. All you have to proficient at is using scissors-no sewing required......

That is a good tool, i'd not seen that exact thing before (I think Calumet will sell you something similar) but for me the tape wins on practicality. Its always there, you can't lose it, its always out and ready, and it serves as its own reminder to use it. I know if I was using a separate calculator I would definitely forgot to use it now and again. And I would lose it, or have it blown away or something!

But as ever, your mileage may vary.

I have just noticed this thread...

Its a good Idea...

Ikea stores (in the UK) Have dotted around the furniture department rolls of printed paper tape measures printed in mm's cm's and feet and inches. just help yourself to a few and put one ot two inyour wallet for further use (after you have purchased something on course!)

It will take much more than a free tape measure to tempt me into an Ikea store.
