Exhibition advice required
I might have the opportunity to share some exhibition space with another photographer in May 2011. The specific details are unknown at present.
My immediate response was, "In principal, yes". As I feel that anything that gets me even more active in the darkroom I'm up for and interested in. Therefore, I would like to ask advice, especially from those who have exhibition experience, if there are any questions I MUST ask before committing myself. Many thanks.

Exhibition prints
You are wise to ask this question. Only too often people talk about having an exhibition, with little planning and detail as to what is involved. I would suggest that some of the first questions you ask are –
•What is the wall space I’m allocated? This will help you plan size and framing. •Are prints for sale (with or without frame) and if so what commission do the gallery take and what are you fellow exhibitors asking price for prints? •Who are the target audience? •What publicity is the exhibition getting? •Am I going to exhibit originals or scanned prints? |

And does the gallery charge for the hire of the room?

Valid points raised so far. You also have to factor in mounting and framing costs together with labelling. You will have to agree on these with the other photographer in order to present a cohesive show. Also, and I’m sure your already appreciate this, all aspects of the exhibition must be to the very highest standards.

After having just finished an exhibition I would like to back up Dave's comment that everything has to be of the highest standard otherwise it'll just look amateurish, cheap frames from a market stall just doesn't cut the mustard.
When it comes to pricing your work the general rule of thumb is to add up the cost of producing the framed work then times that by three i.e. if your material costs (print, mount, frame etc.) are £60 then sell for £180. Gallery commission varies between 35% to 45% so you will end up with just over £100, take off your material costs and there's not a lot left. Unfortunately putting on an exhibition ain't going to make make you rich but seeing your work on display is awfully satisfying. Have you decided to make your images part of a limited edition? if you have then gallery owners like you to sign the print NOT the mount. You also might like to budget for drinks and nibbles if you have a private viewing. Paul |
