Default Nikon AiS

Hi, not sure this needs a thread on its own, as I think it is a simple question but here goes.

I'm looking at looking to buy a new lens (on a very tight budget) for my F2as and have come across an ai-s lens that hopefully may end up being in the right price range.

Will an ai-s lens function fully on a F2as, as if I have read it right, it was designed for use in semi auto modes (P & S) on later cameras ?

Sorry for such a simple question, but I haven't been able to find a simple answer by asking the internet.

Ian

Nit picking I know. but. So long as it is a genuine Nikon AIS lens. 3rd party AIS lenses didn't always have the 'Rabbits Ears' to enable it to work on the basic F2 which didn't use Ai lenses because they couldn't couple with the meters, let alone AIS.

Even the 'E' series AIS lenses will not couple with the meter on the basic F2.

It should work properly on the F2 with the AS prism. Proper Ai-S lenses have the minimum aperture value coloured orange on the scale. Both Ai and Ai-S should have a second, smaller series of aperture numbers close to the lens mount. Most retained the meter-coupling prong, but it’s not necessary for that prism.
I’ve been buying some manual focus Nikkor lenses recently. I’ve bought two of the 55mm F2.8 Micro-Nikkor. This is a great lens, on paper, but both of mine have had issues which would make me think twice about getting another. One, which came from Japan, had a stiff focusing action. This was not as a result of damage, but because of the lubricant ageing. This can usually be fixed, but when I contacted my repairer, who is a Nikon specialist, he told me that he doesn’t work on this particular lens.
The other had a fault with the aperture. This was repaired, but a different issue with the aperture has surfaced.
This has all been very disappointing as other manual focus Nikon lenses, including the Series E, have been great.
There is an older 55mm f3.5 Micro which may be a better bet. I have the 60mm AF-D version which is superb, but is much heavier than any of the 55mm versions.
I hope your purchase works out well.
Alex.
