Tony, I doubt if there are any 2 people who use the same film/dev combo on this forum, let alone the one you mention.
All I can say, is that there should be no reason why you shouldn't get excellent results with the combo you use. I think most people would agree that there are many variables to a film/dev combo but ultimately personal taste will triumph. And it may surprise you, but I would say that just about everyone arrives at their choice through a process of trial and error and more by accident rather than by design! Based on my own experience, I would say forget about the destination and really start enjoying the journey. Be guided by your own experience and results and not by that of others. Don't see it as a source of frustration but rather a process of self-enrichment and self-discovery. I truly believe this is a walk we all must make alone. Finally, I look forward to seeing your results and sharing in the successes and failures.

Hi Tony and welcome to FADU. You have a good general combination there with an Ilford film in an Ilford developer. The 'best combination' is hard to define as this is down to personal choice. Also there will be: 'what is best for,' still life, portrait, landscape , street work, stage work , sports photography and so on. If you are starting out and are trying a bit of most things FP4+ and Ilfosol will serve you well. Neil.

Hi Tony and welcome to Fadu, You will find that no 2 photographers will have the same ideas about tonality and sharpness/developer, for me I rather like Fomapan 400 in either d76/id11,(the same developer one from Kodak and one from ilford), or Rodinal/ro9 1 shot, I also like Tri x in those combinations, and I say I can tell the difference, these suit my way of working and the subjects I like to photograph, but others will have different ideas, and others will say that Fomapan in rodinal is rubbish, so it all depends on what you like, if you like FP4 in your developer then use it, if you want to try something different then try it, photography is about what you want, and if you are happy then that is all that matters.

hi Tony you have chosen a top flight film and dev all I would say is because of the quite short dev times watch your temperature dilution and development times. that is the combination that i use, and i would recommend it
good luck paul |

Hi Tony and welcome to FADU. I can only echo what people have already said there is no magic bullet just lots of different personal preferences.
