Focusing on grain is fine if there is grain to focus on, but if using a slow film, in a fine grain developer, or using MF negaitves then at times, the grain can be so fine as to be invisible, even with a fast film, such as Fomapan 400, in MF, it can be hard to focus on the grain in,say,10 by 8
even from 35mm, so in that case it is better to try and focus on the fine detail in the negative, the grain focuser is used to make certain that the negative is focused perfectly, and I also suggest that you make a final check on the focus just beforeyou make the final exposure as the negative can pop, or go out of focus with theat from the bulb, I always check with the lens stopped down as some lenses can shift focus as you stop them down, in the meantime welcome to the dark art of print making, have fun
Richard

One other point: the vast majority of focusers need to be near the centre of the print - more than a handful of degrees off-centre and it will go dark.

Focus on the grain (or as Richard says, on some high-contrast detail) at full lens aperture and once sharp, close the lens down a couple of stops (typically) to the aperture you are going to print at and check the sharpness again (some older/cheaper lenses can exhibit a focus shift when you stop them down - I think this is rare, but worth checking for the first few times).
