In the new world run by Google it is working! With all the visits to their website - probably a few from FADU - Google starts to rank their site as interesting as plenty of people are visiting it, even more so when it’s from a specialist site like FADU. So, eventually, when a search for analogue film or whatever is done on Google, ‘analogue wonderland’ will be there. (A simplified example, I admit) That’s how it works - so yes, their marketing campaign is working and is building them an online presence! Good luck to them. Anything to give the Ilford venture capitalists a bit of competition.

If as it has been suggested that the B&W is 're-branded' Foma film why buy this when Foma is readily available elsewhere and probably cheaper.

No band wagon jumping here as it has probably broken down.

Thanks Marty. Yes he gets around. He was once based in Harrogate but of course may not be a Yorkshireman, then he was from London and his company is registered in Amersham, Bucks

I am a "glass half empty" man myself but I do wonder how long the business might last.

One thing I am fairly sure about is that the market being aimed for is not ourselves

Thanks for the link, Ian. There seemed to be about 18 mins of a 1hr 20 odd mins of the podcast devoted to his new business and I learned that: 1 he expects to stock all 171 different films in the analogue range

2. He hopes that he can help the major manufacturers to let him take over a large part of film distribution business so they can concentrate of film development.

I did not learn: 1. How this will be accomplished when it isn't even his main full time job. No mention of staff, distribution logistics etc
2. How he intends to compete with all the other retailers on price, delivery.

I got the impression that his profit comes from what may be his unique selling point, namely a one stop for all film so it becomes cheaper and more convenient to order from Analogue Wonderland than order and pay for film from Bergger, Ferrania, Ilford etc

I haven't looked yet but his launch is tomorrow, so does anyone know if the website's "ducks are now in a row"?

Anyone who signed up (as I did) will get an e-mail at 0800 BST tomorrow, giving us access to the website before it opens at 0900 in general. I think I'll dip in to see what it's like, probably during that hour.

Password access features on the website but isn't operational: I assume that my magic e-mail will include a password.

I see no point in being either positive or negative about this. It's up to Mr McKay to make it work.

PS: I didn't win any "bundles" (didn't expect to). The fact that I didn't suggests that at least 50 people apart from me signed up.

He may well make it work, Michael but I was just a little surprised that the interviewers didn't ask more questions about the "how" especially after they had emphasised, I think at least twice that this new enterprise was not his full time job.

Having made this point twice, it just seemed to prompt the listener - or at least this listener - to wonder how it was to be done.

Mike - I gave up on the podcast as it began so self-indulgently and looked as if it would never get down to business. I suspect it never actually did, judging by what you say.

Am I reading it right? Why do you need a password for a website? A website is usually the window for the business not one where you have to be in the clique.
Sounds very amateurish to me. (Or a scam to get your E Mail and use it elsewhere)

The password was just a one-off for early access. Early access gave access to some special offers I think - no idea exactly what as I did not bite.

The guy works in marketing so it's not surprising that he is using various tactics to advertise and push the site - teasers always get people's attention, just ask the movie trailer industry. He is also apparently targeting social media which makes sense - even Ilford have been hitting that demographic hard in recent years. Sadly, very few of these new film users will ever print in a darkroom, but they are where the increase in film sales are coming from and at least a few may be tempted to the dark side.

Just a guy opening an online shop at a time when film sales are increasing for the first time in gawd alone knows how long (according to Ilford/Harman). Obviously, it will never reach anywhere like what it was, but an increase is an increase.

Other recent episodes of the podcast linked to by Ian have an interview with people at Harman spread over three episodes that are well worth listening to and they suggest sales at about 10% of what they were at their height - which is more than I would have guessed given almost zero film being used commercially these days.

So, bottom line for me is: good luck to him. Given that I generally buy a range of things besides film I am not really his target customer - unless I decide to play with some of the "boutique" films he stocks - which is a possibility. Oh, and at least he has spelt "analogue" correctly, so I can forgive most of the marketing w@nk .

Cheers, Bob.

Had a look, his films are more expensive than the films sold by the sponsors of this web site.
