Will do, Ian. I've tried unscrewing it using a rubber stopper but it won't shift. I've just dribbled some lighter fuel around the edges in the hope that it might break the stiction if left to soak overnight. Might try wrapping some sandpaper around it and gripping it with a zip tie.

I see what you've done to remove the helical, Ian, cutting a couple of slots in it and using a knife. That would definitely work. I'm wondering if I could superglue a flat surface to the outside surface of the helical and unscrew it that way. I've got a special glue in the fridge which comes with a solvent that dissolves the glue. I might be able to do it that way. Nothing to lose so long as I'm careful not to get any of the glue or solvent on the glass!

SUCCESS! Managed to get the helical off after soaking the threads in WD40 and then applying lots of pressure with a rubber stopper. What a tough bugger though! It's too late to look further into the shutter so I'll leave that until tomorrow. With luck, it will be something straightforward that's wrong with it (some chance, eh?).

Here's where I'm at now. Unfortunately, there's nothing obviously amiss with the shutter mechanism. I had thought the shutter was cocked but it's not and it won't cock.
