xp2+
Had a chat with a man who used to work in a photo processing shop. He said that the colour processing machine aimed for gray when processing prints from xp2+, any colour cast brown/orange or green etc was computer error. So xp2+ printed on colour paper could give different colour casts depending on how well the computer did its job. He had no idea what the filtration was as the machine was set on auto for colour prints from colour films. So it should be possible to get decent prints on colour paper from XP2+ with a little experimentation.

Norm, any mini-lab worth its salt can produce very acceptable neutral RA4 prints from either trad B&W or chromogenic B&W film.
More importantly, are you any further forward with your quest for the settings that will give you a sepia look on a RA4 print? Any decent mini-lab operator should be able produce a look in various shades of brown without too much trouble. The problem is that as I understand it, the settings from a mini-lab machine that produce neutral or a shade of brown cannot be translated into the Y and M settings needed on an optical enlarger with a dichroic head. Well maybe they can but it might take the mini-lab machine's engineer to be able to do so I have often wondered if it might be possible to write to the machine's maker and ask if there is a formula that translates the print colour settings in a lab machine into the equivalent Y and M. Really can't see the point using these C41 type films for B&W as they have no character and they are even worse when printed on RA4 paper, it's just so uncreative with a sanitised look for me to use it.
Ok for the non photographic snapper though, not the B&W specialist. Just my thoughts guys. J.

They do have character, it's just a different character.

I think we are losing sight of Norm's original request which was simply to find out how to re-produce a sepia look on RA4 paper from an XP2+ neg.
Yes he could use trad B&W film and B&W paper with trad sepia toning but that was not his mission Mike |
