I hope that makes sense! The pic shows 2x 4x5 sheets in a Universal (2x35mm) tank. The sheets are sitting on their long edges. Agitation has to be gentle, and you need a full tank of chemicals.
If you need to remove the fins from the orbital lid, there is some good info on FADU in old threads. I used a modellers razor saw to do mine. It took ages, but I was being careful not to damage an expensive purchase.
Alex.

You can do 2x 4x5 sheets in a Paterson by removing the spiral and lodging the sheets in edge to edge. You need the centre black tube in place. I’ll try to show a picture of what I mean. It works, and may work for 9x12 too. Alex.

You might be onto something there, Alex. The expensive Jobo tanks have a low 'ridge' on either side of the tank to help separate the films and keep them in place. It's nothing elaborate and it could be worth giving a go in one of the older, unloved and unwanted film processing tanks.

What volume of solutions were you using in the Orbital?

I think the small cups are around 75ml, but i regularly process four 5x4 negs in my orbital with 300ml of each solution.

The other thing i do is take the tray off the manual stand and sit it in a tray of water that helps keep the temps up, and also adds a level of randomness to the agitation.

Mike, as it was my first attempt and I didn't really know what I was doing, and after reading Trevors article

http://www.film-and-darkroom-user.or...hlight=orbital

I used 200ml of developer and 250ml of stop and fixer, ambient temp of kitchen was about 24C and had to cool the chem's prior to use, dev went in at 20C.

Alex, Marty, you got me thinking, wonder if a couple of rows of self adhesive "sticky bumps" inside the Patterson would act like the ridge in the Jobo

Ian

That sounds like a plan, Ian. I should point out that the method shown came to me from another person on this, or perhaps another forum. I found it difficult to believe that it works, but it does. Emulsion should face inwards. The spacers would give a bit more security. Bits of plastic, or the silicone dots would work. Any addition to the inside is likely to render the tank unusable with spirals, so you could put in something quite thick.

On Alex's illustrated method, removing the anti-halation layer won't be the issue that you have to overcome with an Orbital.
