Quote: "Brierley (pictured) admitted that use of traditional home-based darkrooms among photographic enthusiasts 'has gone'."

Rather demonstrates that they have lost the plot I think.

I noticed that as well. Surely they must be aware of the analogue photography forums like FADU to realise that there are still darkroom enthusiast around. Perhaps we`re just a tiny minority.

That sounds like something written to reflect the opinion of the writer. We don't actually know if Brierly actually said something along the lines that it is much reduced. AP pushes on its advertiser's behalf so such "paraphrasing" is not unexpected.

As for the purported increase - that is only the increase as seen by Ilford/Harman - that may simply reflect the reduction in film user's options and Ilford's advertising.

More white-noise as far as I can see - no real information content.

I think the quote about 'traditional enthusiasts and home darkrooms gone' is probably fairly accurate. Us lot are a very small minority in the grand scale of things.

On the other hand though I actually feel a little optimistic about the purported increase in film based material sales, even though it is mainly because of the students .... students are pretty good at changing fashions ! The quote about the rise in people taking traditional photography evening classes (if accurate) is also interesting, any new blood should be encouraged and maybe the novelty of digital is beginning to fade a little ??

I'd be very worried if Ilford were reporting a drop in sales as we'd all be pretty starved without them

I can well see why Ilford are interested in colleges and students as most colleges buy Ilford materials and look no further. Usually fast print processors are used instead of trays so many 10x8 RC papers and chems are used up. Prices are not an issue with colleges - they use Ilford as it is good, relable, easy to order and the money is coming out of budget. Not so easy with amateurs who look about for bargains and specilaist items and have no real loyalty to any one company. I am not surprised they appear to have written us off!

I wonder if the percentage of home darkroom users was ever significantly higher than it is today. It's not so much the reduction in home darkroom users that is the problem but the fact that even before digi, B&W had become a poorman's colour through the 70s and 80s. Then minilabs and mail order processing geared themselves up for the consumers needs which was cheap and cheerful colour processing. Even now finding a lab to dev non chromogenic B&W film and print on B&W paper is difficult.

I think there has been a small renaisssance in B&W and the college B&W market is quite healthy but the days of the man in the street using B&W film as his first choice have gone and I can't see it coming back.

We are a niche group like buyers of vinyl 45s and 78s played on old Dansette record players. There is or was up to a couple of years ago a guy making part of a living or maybe his whole living selling such things at a Sunday market in "Camelot" near Chorley in Lancashire but if he were to multiply into a 100 guys the market for the goods would never sustain them.

I sell specialist music for a living - we get mailouts every week of VINYL releases - there is an incredibly bouyant specialist market out there, to the extent that small-scale manufacturers in the States can sell the likes of this lot (at the bottom of this page). Those are wholesale prices (so bear in mind there's a mark-up of roughly +VAT + 40%) so you can see that whilst they are expensive, they know they can actually sell enough to make these things worthwhile.
When cds came in everyone predicted the end of vinyl, EMI et al sold off all their cutting equipment which was bought up by some far-sighted individuals and I now see that there's a hardcore of vinyl buyers out there who will pay these prices.
It looks to be going the same way with trad darkroom materials . . . I still can't get over the price of a box of 5x4 TRX though!!!

Phil I have got the original Shadows LP( the Apache one). Great days! We practically wore out a 45 of Johnny and the Hurricanes and the necessary Dansette player at Hogmanay 1960/61!

Father kept on wanting to play an Andy Stewart record but couldn't find the hole for the crank handle anywhere on the Dansette so Johnny and the Hurricanes it was :.
